The Road to and the Tour of Munich - Monday & Tuesday 9/8 & 9/9/2014

After enjoying the incredible Swiss Alps we sadly packed our bags and began our journey back to Munich with our tour. We all agreed that Murren was one of the most beautiful places we had ever seen and we all agreed we could easily have enjoyed another day here. Our trip to Munich was the longest bus ride of the tour.

We did stop for a few breaks including a visit to Lindau Harbor for a leisurely lunch and a quick climb up the lighthouse. Lindau Harbor was built between 1812 during the reign of Maximilian I  and 1854 as his son Ludwig II  was on the throne. Numerous pleasure boats arrive here daily from Switzerland, Austria and other parts of Germany. The town is charming and the view from the top of the lighthouse of the provided a panorama of the town, harbor and the two lions guarding the entrance to the harbor.

We had two nights in Munich with one full day as we arrived late in the day.  We spent the next morning taking a tour of the city with our guide Kathleen where we learned quite a bit about the history of Munich from Roman times to WWII. Bob took a more extensive "Third Reich" informational tour in the afternoon. It was an in depth historical tour that provided not only where the Nazi movement began but provided great detail about the why it happened as well. It was a combination of events including the depression of 1929, European economic conditions and the Versailles Treaty. For Bob it really was more than a text book history lesson - he walked the same streets visited by Hitler and his supporters.

I decided to do a lighter tour and  rented a bicycle and visited the English Gardens with fellow tour members. They thought my bike looked very Bavarian and aptly nicknamed me "Heidi."

Gail in the English Gardens - yikes, what a big bike and no helmet. Try peddling that big boy up a few hills.

Augusteiner beer - the best beer in Munich!
