Rain, rain and more rain! We started and ended the day with cool temperatures and rain. I also had the beginnings of a cold - not fun. However, the day turned out quite well beginning with a short "Sound of Music" tour beginning where they filmed Maria and Georg experiencing their first kiss in the Gazebo in Salzburg. Bob and I shared a romantic moment in the rain.
Here is the Basilica St. Michael where they filmed the wedding scene for the movie. Can't you just see Maria walking down the aisle?
After visiting the church we took time for a quick dessert and a coffee before we headed towards Hallstatt for the rest of the day.
It is located near the Hallstätter See (a lake). Hallstatt itself is perched on a hillside and is very small and charming. Hallstatt is known for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times, and is located. We reached our hotel around lunchtime and were given a private tour of the lake.
There is also something very unique about the cemetery in Hallstatt in that since the town is built on a hill there was very room for burials. Since the town is primarily catholic cremations were not allowed until the mid 60's, so they actually buried people for 10-12 years then exhumed their bodies and saved the bones and painted the skulls.
Families were kept together and event though it seemed a bit odd, there was some charm to how these bones and skulls were lovingly stored.
