Short blog today as we have now arrived in Vaison la Romaine where we will begin riding tomorrow.
CHRISTOPHER LEADING THE WAY!
Stopped in Orange to visit the Roman Theater (Theatre Antique d’Orange). It was built in the very early days of the Roman Empire and can hold up 10,000 spectators and is in use even today. It was built early in the 1st century AD..
Located in the heart of the Rhône Valley, the Roman Theatre of Orange is without doubt one of the finest remnants of the Roman Empire. Exceptional evidence of Ancient Rome and part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, it is the best preserved theatre in Europe.
It owes its fame in particular to its magnificent stage wall, amazingly well-preserved and unique in the Western world. A venue for shows in Roman times, it continues in this role today,
We did a Virtual reality “tour” prior to going into the theater that took us through the building of the theater, it’s several destructions and rebuilding over the centuries.
THIS STATUE WAS UNIQUE IN THAT THEY CHANGED OUT THE HEAD TO MATCH THAT OF THE CURRENT RULER. - CERTAINLY SAVE A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY!
We also drove by the Arc de Triomphe, another UNESCO World heritage site. Then off to Vaison La Romaine to begin our bicycle tour tomorrow.

Hi, just caught up with your trip commentary, again, many thanks for the photos and words, I am really enjoying a small glimpse of France. My brother spent his junior year abroad in university in Provence and loved that part of France. I can see why. I also liked the virtual tour on the iPad that you showed. I usually can’t imagine how things looked before they were a pile of rubble ;). Happy trails starting tomorrow on your bike trip!
